SOME VIDEOS OPEN MEDIAPLAYER, BUT HAVE ONLY SOUND AND FIRST "PIC"
MEDIAPLAYER 10 GIVES A BIG NUMBER AND NOTHING MORE

I think that you are trying to play divx formats on WMP. They don't have all the codecs. Try a Google search for "divx players and download DivX player 7.1, it's free. Another posibility is that your divx files are bad. Download for free Divxrepair and they will work.

Strange that they would be using mpeg 5.

I would have said wmp 11 is only beta so there maybe issues with it, but if it happened with 10 also, it is probably your codecs.
However, you can do one of three things. Dr. Mike's suggestion is a good one. Alternatively, if you got the vid from here or another site, post the address here and I will look at it for you, or if you want download Avicodec. This tool will let you see what codec is required to view the file.

download K-Lite Codec pack 2.27. and then reboot.. ALL players that you have on your system will then have access to the codecs from the pack.
