Though I shut my PC down properly via start etc, recently the blue screen 'checking disc for consistency' on startup won't show so I have to use Run and chkdsk manually every time. thanks, mpp, but the problem is the yamaha sound driver the technician installed before he later found it was the soundcard that was the problem - software not hardware - and forgot to uninstall the yamaha driver. the soundcard is fine, no default sound driver is the problem. i will try your other s...

also 'ad-aware' from lavasoft. (google it)
if you have genuine windows their anti-virus/spyware is supposed to be pretty good at microsoft updates
